Damien and Griffith wins doubles title
COSTA MESA - Corona del Mar High’s Leslie Damien and Kristen
Griffith won the Pacific Coast League doubles championship with a 6-2,
6-4 win over teammates Laura Claster and Katie Tenerelli at the PCL
Championship at Costa Mesa Tennis Center Thursday.
Damien and Griffith entered as the fifth seed, while Claster and
Tenerelli were seeded seventh, and both teams were surprise finalists.
In the singles tournament, Laguna Beach’s Ashley Maddocks first defeated
CdM’s Nadia Vaughan, 7-6 (7-6) 6-1, and then moved on and won against
former USTA doubles partner and CdM freshman Anne Yelsey, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2,
to win the PCL title in a match that lasted over two hours.
To reach the finals, Yelsey disposed of another touted freshman,
University’s Aimie Kim, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-0.
All finalists will advance to the CIF Southern Section individual
tournament, which starts on Nov. 20.
