Eugene Starikov came up with the defensive play of the game, and he

turned in into the game-deciding scoring drive to lead the Huntington

Beach Chargers to a 19-12 upset of the host Lakewood Lancers at Lakewood

High.

With the score tied at 12-12 in the fourth quarter, Lakewood was moving

in for the go-ahead score when Starikov recovered a Lancer fumble at the

Charger five-yard line. Huntington Beach’s offense proceeded to march the

ball downfield and Starikov capped the 95-yard drive with a short

touchdown run to give the Chargers the victory.

It was the second score of the game for Starikov, whose first touchdown

run in the opening quarter gave Huntington Beach a 6-0 lead.

The 30-yard scoring drive was set up by Sean Corcoran’s fumble recovery.

Josh Herrera scored on a 60-yard run to give the Chargers a 12-6 halftime

lead.

Starikov also had a hand in one of Huntington Beach’s best defensive

performances of the season as he finished with one interception. In

addition to Corcoran, Jay Petros also had a fumble recovery, Jake Slaton

had a quarterback sack, and Nick Josenhans led the team in tackles.
