In what has become an all-too-familiar scenario these past two

years, Marina High fullback Ray Mietkiewicz continues to rewrite the

school’s football record book.

But this time, fame had its price.

‘I told our offensive line that if (quarterback) Beau (Brown) and I

combined to rush for five touchdowns against Huntington Beach, then

they’d be treated to Double-Doubles, shakes, and fries at In-and-Out,’

Mietkiewicz said. ‘I made a promise that I intend to keep.’

Mietkiewicz single-handedly attained that magic No. 5, as he rushed for a

school single-game record five touchdowns in a 47-15 victory over the

Oilers.

That high-five put him back about $25 dollars and on Monday, Mietkiewicz

lived up to his promise by taking his linemen to a well-deserved meal.

‘Our line has been playing so well all season that this is the least that

I could do,’ said Mietkiewicz, who sits with his bodyguards when watching

game film each week. ‘They deserve a lot of credit.’

The 6-foot-1, 235 senior has inked his name to nearly every rushing

record at Marina, save for longest touchdown run from scrimmage and the

best average per rush.

With two more regular season games to play, and at least one postseason

game on the horizon, those two records could be in jeopardy.

‘Ray’s thing - bottom line - is that he wants to win,’ Marina Coach Mark

Rehling said. ‘He enjoys these personal highlights, but the team winning

is more important to him than those numbers. Had we lost to Huntington,

then those 300-plus yards wouldn’t have meant the same to him.’

Mietkiewicz rushed through, around, and over the Oilers for 323 yards, an

effort that bettered Greg Karman’s previous school record single-game

rushing mark of 283 yards established 22 years ago.

Mietkiewicz’s records are staggering: most touchdowns in a game, most

points scored in a single season, most touchdowns in a career, most

touchdowns in a single season, most career yardage, most yardage in a

single season - and so on.

But one thing Mietkiewicz hasn’t owned yet is a Sunset League crown.

‘I want a league championship for this team,’ he added. ‘This has been a

fun year. We’ve had great senior leadership and our confidence has grown

each week.’

And, so do Mietkiewicz’s records.
