IRVINE - Newport Harbor High’s boys cross country team took a big

step toward the Sea View League championship Friday afternoon, winning

the dual meet portion of the season at Woodbridge Friday, with Chris

McMillen, Chris Landgren and Doug Dukes leading the way with a 3-4-5

finish, stopping the watches at 15:51, 15:54 and 16:01.

“The boys really had some big improvements with Chris and Chris,”

noted Newport Harbor Coach Eric Tweit, who watched Amber Steen lead his

girls with a first-place finish in 17:56.

The girls, however, are running second to Woodbridge entering next

week’s league finals, with each segment (dual meets and finals) given 50%

credence to the title.

“It was a great team effort for the boys,” continued Tweit. “We had

six in the top 11, and Ivan Romero and Joel Furman really did a great

job.”

John Peschelt was seventh for Harbor, then Romero and Furman, both

sophomores, finished ninth and 11th.

Steen, a junior, finished with a 13-second gap over the nearest

competition.

Woodbridge, however, went 2-3-4-5 and 8-9-10 and would appear to be

the odds-on favorite for the overall championship.

Sonya Mechkor turned in a 19:02 for sixth place for Harbor, and Lynn

Rinek clocked a 19:55 for 13th, which caught her coach’s eye.
