Boys water polo: Sailors win two
SAN JOSE - Newport Harbor High’s boys water polo club won its first
two games of the 1999 Cal State Water Polo Tournament with an 11-7 win
over Menlo High and a 10-5 win over Harvard-Westlake.
In the opener against Menlo, the Sailors jumped out to a 10-3
first-half lead and never looked back.
Robert Weiner had three goals, while Peter Belden and Brandan Hansen
each had two goals for Newport (22-1).
Tim Birdsong, Brandon McClain and Tim Johnson combined for 14 saves in
goal for the Tars.
In the second-game win over Harvard-Westlake, ranked No. 5 in CIF
Southern Section Division I, it was a two-player show as Ryan Cook had
six goals, while Belden added four for the second-ranked Sailors.
Belden, Paul Kepner and Birdsong each had three assists for the
Sailors, who will take on the winner of the Corona del Mar-Coronado High
matchup next in the tournament.
