Boys water polo: Newport survives

LAKE FOREST - In a battle of two of the Southland’s best teams,
Newport Harbor fought off host El Toro, 10-9, Tuesday in boys Sea View
League Water Polo action.
Peter Belden scored five goals to lead the Sailors, who led, 5-4, after
the first half and never lost the lead to the Chargers. Ryan Cook added
two goals, while goalie Tim Birdsong stopped 10 shots for the Sailors.
Newport Harbor, ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division I improves
to 20-1 overall, while No. 4 El Toro drops to 21-4.
The Sailors next travel to the Bay Area to compete in the Cal-State Water
Polo Tournament, which is comprised of the top-six teams in Southern
California and the top-six teams in Northern California.
