Jr. All-American Football
Bob Silva scored on a two-yard blast up the middle with under a
minute to play to give Fountain Valley the lead, and cornerback Ross
Morrow knocked down a Mission Viejo pass in the end zone with no time on
the clock as the Jaguars held on to post a 20-14 wild victory in a Jr.
All-American Football Jr. Midget Division game held at Fountain Valley
High.
Morrow’s knockdown was the third play the Jaguars had to survive
with time expired.
Taking over at their own 30-yard line and with eight seconds left,
the Cowboys gained 32 yards on a flea-flicker as time ran out. However, a
roughing the passer penalty against the Jaguars added 15 more yards to the play and gave Mission Viejo another try, which was an incomplete pass
into the end zone. But just as on the previous play, the Jaguars were hit
with another penalty, this one for face guarding.
The Cowboys were awarded yet one more chance, a pass play which
Morrow batted away to officially end the struggle.
In a see-saw battle, Fountain Valley, now 6-0-1 overall, trailed
14-7 but tied the score with 2:30 remaining when Michael Musso caught a
three-yard touchdown pass, and Kyle Feiler’s kick brought the Jaguars
even.
It was the second touchdown of the game for Musso, who scooped up
a loose ball on an errant lateral pass by the White Cowboys, and returned
it 40 yards for the Jaguars’ first score of the game.
With the score knotted at 14-14, Fountain Valley’s defense took
over. Joey Vasquez turned in a quarterback sack for a 10-yard loss and following an incomplete pass, the Jaguars dropped the White Cowboys for a
five-yard loss on a reverse. The defense wasn’t fooled, either, when
Mission Viejo’s gamble on a punt on fourth-and-25 yielded only five
yards.
The Jaguars began their game-winning drive from the White Cowboys’
25-yard line with 1:03 left on the clock.
The rushing of Silva, Feiler, and Bryan Reihm (who also blocked an
extra point) positioned the Jaguars at the two-yard line, setting up
Silva’s touchdown.
Fountain Valley has a bye this Saturday, but returns to action
Nov. 6 in a 3 p.m. game at Irvine.
A victory there would give the Jr. Midget Jaguars the league
championship.
