Surf City SATs top U.S. average

The class of 1999 at Huntington Beach Union High School District scored

significantly higher on college admission tests than their state and

national peers.

Huntington Beach high school graduates scored an average of 1,071 on the

SAT. The national average was 1,016; the state average, 1,011.

Fountain Valley High School had the highest average SAT score at 1,103;

the lowest in the district was Westminster High School at 976.

Edison High School had the highest percentage of its graduates take

college entrance exams: 80 percent. Westminster was the lowest in the

district, with only 46 percent.

Vikings band together

The Marina High School Viking Band is looking for donations for a garage

sale. Supplies will be accepted in the school band room Saturday, Oct. 30

from 9 a.m. to noon and Nov. 3 to 5 from 3 to 6 p.m. The band is not

asking for donations of clothes.

In order to raise more money, the band is having a combination pancake

breakfast and car wash at the same location.

On Nov 6., from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Viking band will serve breakfast

and wash cars to raise money for new uniforms, new instruments and a

canvas floor for Color Guard competitions.

‘Plunge’ into golf

Huntington Beach High School is asking golfers to participate in its 1999

golf tournament and raffle, Auction and Awards Dinner at Cypress Golf

Club on Nov. 1. Proceeds will benefit the “Take the Plunge” campaign to

reopen the swimming pool, which closed in 1991. Non-golfers are also

invited to attend the awards dinner. For further information contact Mike

Time to math-off

Zany Brainy kids game store is starting a 24-game Math Club beginning

Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. Children ages 8 to 10 are invited to participate and

compete with other kids their own age. Zany Brainy will also have a

preschool craft time every Monday at 10:30 a.m. The crafts are designed

to build children’s motor skills and experience colors, shapes, textures

and more through craft projects.
