Although Edison High will be looking to nab its first victory over
Los Alamitos Friday since the Griffins joined the league, the Chargers
have given the Griffins fits in their last two visits to Sheue Field: in
1995, Los Alamitos overcame a 20-0 halftime deficit to pull out a
dramatic victory and two years ago, kicked a field goal in the closing
seconds to foil the Chargers again...
Edison has lost the services of starting defensive lineman David
McCord for the season. The senior underwent ankle surgery last week...
End of the Road: Ocean View’s five-game road traveling show comes
to an end Saturday when the Seahawks take on Santa Ana at Santa Ana Bowl,
which Ocean View Coach Harold Eggers has called his team’s “home away
from home.” Ocean View’s report card heading into this weekend’s clash
with the Saints? 3-1...
Ocean View wide receiver/defensive back Brett Crevda had a big
night in last week’s win over Saddleback, gaining 81 yards and a
touchdown on just three receptions, and also scored on a 92-yard kickoff
return...
Marina High fullback Ray Mietkiewicz is closing in on the
1,000-yard rushing mark. The senior needs just 96 more to reach that
plateau...
Mietkiewicz already has become the school’s all-time career leader
in both rushing yards and touchdowns...
Amazingly, Marina fumbled the ball five times in last week’s 28-20
win over Edison; however, the Vikings didn’t lose one...
Coach Mark Rehling says his Vikings will need to play “error-free”
ball again if they hope to beat Fountain Valley...
Add Rehling: According to the coach, Marina has not won
consecutive Sunset League games “in more than six years.”...
“Big” Matchup, II: Two of the area’s best fullbacks will be on
display Friday at Westminster High’s Bill Boswell Field when Marina hosts
Fountain Valley. While Mietkiewicz is averaging a hefty 8.7 yards per
carry, the Barons will counter with Steven Fifita, who has a 6.9 per rush
average...
What Could Have Been: Mietkiewicz and Fifita were teammates as
freshman at Marina before Fifita transferred to Fountain Valley. The
freshmen Vikings that year went unbeaten at 10-0...
Respect: It was mentioned on this page here last week that the
other four Sunset League teams were trying this season to break the
stranglehold that both Los Alamitos and Esperanza have held on the league
title since the two schools joined the Sunset. Well, back on the final
weekend of the 1996 regular season, Fountain Valley High was the first
local team to upend either, beating host Esperanzam 29-22, to earn a
share of the championship with both the Aztecs and Los Alamitos. The
Griffins then proceeded to win a coin flip to determine the league’s top
entry in the Division I playoffs. Sorry about the oversight, Baron
faithful.
