Sea Kings reach semifinals
DEL MAR - The Corona del Mar High girls volleyball team won its
pool and upset the No. 1-seeded team in the quarterfinals, but fell in
the semifinals of the Torrey Pines California Challenge Saturday at
Torrey Pines High.
Coach Steve Conti’s squad defeated Stockdale of Bakersfield, 15-13, 8-15,
15-13, 15-11, and Poway, 5-15, 7-15, 15-8, 15-11, 15-13, Friday night to
win its pool.
Then, in the quarterfinals Saturday, CdM topped Lincoln of Stockton,
15-10, 15-12, 5-15, 17-15, before falling to Notre Dame Academy, 11-15,
15-5, 15-11, 9-15, 15-11.
“That’s the same team that knocked us out of the (CIF Southern Section
Division III-A) semifinals last year and it went on to beat Mira Costa in
Saturday’s finals,” said Conti, who had high praise for his team.
“I was really, really pleased with the way we played. All three wins were
against quality teams.”
Conti praised the play of Dimitra Havriluk, Jamie Brownell, Katie Dugin,
Marissa Becker, Jacqueline Becker, Meghan Gallagher and Tracy Brown.
