Eastbluff PTA member Susan Tobiessen was outraged to hear radio

personality Dr. Laura Schlessinger railing against public education

recently, and she challenged her to check out newly opened Eastbluff

Elementary school before the radio doctor says one more word about the

failings of public schools vs. private schools.

“I just think we need a little bit more support,” Tobiessen said. “Not

everyone can afford private schools, and I think she should urge parents

to make their schools better.”

That way, said Tobiessen, Dr. Laura could be a force of good, instead of

a force for controversy.

So far, Dr. Laura has not yet visited the school.

A star is born in Newport Beach

Life is good for Newport Beach native David McKenna.

The 30-year-old screenwriter, who penned the critically acclaimed

“American History X” that garnered actor Edward Norton a Best Actor Oscar

nomination, has another film coming out next weekend titled “Body Shots.”

The movie looks at two groups of twentysomethings struggling to find

love, or at the very least, a decent relationship. It features an

ensemble cast of young actors from such flicks as “Swingers” and “Scream

2.”

Producer Jennifer Keohane said McKenna’s writing style is realistic and

moving.

“David doesn’t skip over the uncomfortable things, he puts a magnifying

glass on them and I think people need to see the kind of films that David

writes,” she said.

McKenna’s next movie, currently in production, is called “Blow,” and

looks at the Medellin drug cartel in the 1970s and 80s.

By the way, “Body Shots” goes head-to-head against Norton’s “Fight

Club,” which also stars Brad Pitt.
