NJB: Newport-Mesa sweeps again
NEWPORT BEACH - All four of Newport-Mesa’s National Junior
Basketball teams were victorious in action this past weekend.
The boys 8th grade All-Net team defeated Huntington Beach, 43-33.
Newport-Mesa was led by Patirck Joyce with 17 points and Taylor Young
with 11 points.
Also adding to the offense were Brian Knox with seven and Pancho
Seaborn with six.
Alex Northridge and Alex Orth led the defensive charge for
Newport-Mesa, who will take on an undefeated Irvine squad Sunday for the
fall championship.
The boys 7th grade team improved to 4-0 with a 5-28 win over Irvine
II.
Brett Perrine had 17 points, while Tyler Lance added 13 points for
Newport-Mesa.
James Hapke and Blaine Gribble, along with combining for 17 points,
controlled the boards, while Ryan Lance, Elliot Kirkpatrick, Neal
Rafferty and Kasey Peters played an effective all-around game.
For the boys 6th graders, they moved into first place with a 48-38 win
over Laguna Hills.
Patrick Williams led the offense with 14 points, while Scott Knox
(nine points), William Lefebvre (eight points), Mike McDaniels (six
points) and Ryan Bagwell (six points) also contributed offensively.
Solid defense was turned in by Dallas Kopp, Shaun Knox, Tony
Krikorian, Clay Jorth and R.J. Durenberger.
On the girls side, the 8th grade team remained unbeaten following
their 33-23 win over Yorba Linda.
Kate Heeschen and Stacey Mersevy each had eight points, while Desiree
Wilson had six and Kellie Flint added five to lead the offense.
Jennifer Rennon, Laruen Nurnberger, Melissa Alves, Alex Orozco and
Sara Stern played solid defensive games for the Newport-Mesa squad.
