ISSUE: VISION 2020 GRANT
Vote: 4-1, with Matthew Harper dissenting
Summary: The board voted 4-1 to allow Fountain Valley, Marina and
Westminster high schools to submit applications to the Orange County
Department of Education. If the applications are accepted the department
will give $1,500 to each school to prepare students for citizenship,
college and careers. No matching funds are required.
ISSUE: HEALTHY START PROGRAM
Vote: 4-1, with Harper dissenting
Summary: The board granted approval to accept a $400,000 grant from the
state Department of Education to establish a Healthy Start program at
Westminster High School. Funding is from June 1999 to June 2002.
The program will provide support to low-income families through various
community partnerships as students transition from elementary school to
high school. Matching funds of $100,000 are required.
ISSUE: FITNESS PROGRAM
Vote: 4-1, with Harper dissenting
Summary: The board approved the district’s participation in 24-Hour
Fitness’ Corporate Membership program for an annual fee of $1,500. The
program will allow district employees to join any 24-Hour fitness center
without paying the initial enrollment fee, which is normally $149.
Employees pay the monthly fee of $24 a month without signing a contract.
ISSUE: PERSONNEL COMMISSION
Vote: 5-0
Summary: Lloyd Vierra was reappointed to the Personnel Commission for a
three-year term, commencing December 1999.
ISSUE: DISTRICT DONATIONS
No Vote
Summary: Charles Phillips from the Orange County Human Relations Council
presented a $1,000 check to Huntington Beach High School. The check was
part of the Building Bridges Award and was presented to student members
of the United Cultural Club and teacher Rose Haunreiter.
