City to allow New Year’s block parties
-- Elise Gee
The city of Costa Mesa will allow residents to celebrate the new
millennium right at home.
The sale and use of certified safe and sane fireworks will be allowed for
the New Year’s celebration. Residents may also organize block parties and
apply to have their streets closed off.
The sale of fireworks will be allowed from Wednesday, Dec. 29 through
Friday, Dec. 31, between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. on those days. Revelers will
be allowed to discharge fireworks from 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31 until 12:30
a.m., Saturday, Jan. 1.
Block parties will be allowed by application only and on a case-by-case
basis, depending on location and the potential for traffic or safety
problems.
