CdM wins again

NEWPORT BEACH - For a second, it seemed like one of those

old-fashioned squeakers between Corona del Mar High and Irvine’s girls

cross country team. Except the Sea Kings’ opponent was Northwood, the

brand new school which took half of Irvine’s talented team.

The match was different beyond the name too. CdM crushed Northwood 15-46

at Back Bay to further assert itself as the class of the Pacific League.

CdM captured the top five spots and easily defeated Nothwood’s heralded

trio of Christie Farson, Jenny Ormos and Jordan Becktold.

“We didn’t have a 100 percent day,” CdM Coach Bill Sumner said, “but we

wanted to make a statement.”

Even without the perfect race, the Sea Kings dominated from the get-go. A

quarter of the way through the race, every CdM runner was ahead of

Northwood’s. And CdM’s top four runners easily ran ahead of Northwood’s

pace.

Liz Morse sprinted out to a huge lead and easily won the race with a time

of 18:22. Jenny Cummins was second at 18:41 despite a fall. Season

Meservey and Diana Hossfeld finished close to each other with times of

18:55 and 19:03. And Katie Quinlan just distanced herself from Farson at

the end to take fifth to give CdM the sweep.

Quinlan provided the one piece of drama when she was hit by an asthma

attack in the middle of the race.

“She had a little bit of a breathing thing,” Sumner said. “All of a

sudden, she dropped three or four spots. I could hear her breathing from

up on the hill when she was down on the bottom.”

After dropping from third to seventh, Quinlan fought back and managed to

finish ahead of Farson. She immediately dropped to the ground in the

chute exhausted by the effort. She managed to get up and afterward said

she was fine.

Jill Quye and Katherine Morse finished eighth and ninth, respectively to

complete the Sea Kings’ dominating performance.
