Boy, how the football fortunes have at Ocean View High have begun

to turn.

In bookend seasons to the decade, the Seahawks have won their first four

games to start the 1999 season, a win total not reached since a 5-4-1

finish in 1990...

The best showing by an Ocean View team was the 7-4 squad of 1989...

In 10 seasons this decade, the school has now won a total of 21 games...

Ocean View is averaging 44 points per game...

The Seahawks travel to Fullerton High to battle Troy this week, and it’s

the third game of a five-game road swing for Ocean View...

Perhaps the biggest surprise in the fourth week of the prep season was

how thoroughly Fountain Valley throttled Servite, 41-0. The Barons did

it, too, with a dominating defensive performance and an offense that

finally broke out of the doldrums...

Prior to its 41-point outburst against the Friars, Fountain Valley had

only scored a total of 40 points in its first three games...

Fountain Valley has only given up one field goal to Servite in the last

two meetings between the two schools...

The Barons got off to 4-0 start last year before being dealt a 24-7 loss

by Trabuco Hills. They’ll get a chance Friday to avenge that loss to the

Mustangs, but will have to do so without the services of their top

rusher, Nedal Abdelmuti, who is serving a one-game suspension following

his ejection from last Saturday’s Servite game...

If last year’s Marina-Mission Viejo game is any indication of things to

come, then Friday’s nonleague meeting between the two teams should be a

barnburner. The Vikings fell in a big hole early, then stormed back and

finally held on for a 35-34 victory last year...

Bob Johnson, former head coach at El Toro High, where he guided the

Chargers to back-to-back CIF titles in 1986-87, is looking for his first

win as a first-year coach at Mission Viejo. His return to coaching hasn’t

been kind, but the Diablos’ 0-4 record has come against tough

competition. ‘They have, in my opinion, the best 0-4 team in the county -

maybe the CIF, and have lost a couple of games in the final minutes,’

Marina Coach Mark Rehling said of the Diablos. ‘They a dangerous

bunch.’...

Mission Viejo’s has lost its four games by a total of 17 points...

Marina comes into the match-up injury-free, but the flu bug has

infiltrated the Viking camp this week...

Marina’s offense will go up against one of the county’s top

defensive backs in Mission Viejo’s Justin Shultz, who comes into Friday’s

game with three interceptions...

The current football season has thus far been kind to Huntington

Beach, which hasn’t suffered nearly as many of the key injuries that

riddled the Oilers at this stage of the season last year. Spider bites

and car wrecks, however, are a different story...

According to Coach Tony Ciarelli, two-way lineman Jordon Connolly

suffered an allergic reaction to a spider bite (the second time for

Connolly). He missed last week’s game against Paramount, and his status

for Friday’s game at Dana Hills was not known. Then there was the two-car

accident involving two Oilers, fullback/linebacker Carlos Adame and

special teams player Brandon Hay. Adame is possibly out for the season,

Ciarelli said...

The Oilers also could be without the services of lineman Brian

Ruziecki, who is still nursing a shoulder injury...

Edison High will be celebrating homecoming Friday when the

Chargers host Arcadia at Huntington Beach High’s Sheue Field...

Charger running back Darryl Poston is averaging nearly 10 yards

(9.9) per carry, and tops all county scorers with 14 touchdowns...

Polling News: Edison is ranked sixth in the latest CIF Southern

Section Division I poll, and Ocean View, which finally is getting the

respect it deserves, comes in at No. 8 in the Division VI rankings.
