Ocean View school board backs bond

The Ocean View School District on Tuesday night endorsed Huntington Beach
Union High School District’s bond issue. The measure, if passed, would
ask property owners to pay for $123 million dollars in school repairs.
At Tuesday’s Board of Trustees’ meeting, Ocean View Supt. James Tarwater
said the Huntington Beach Union district needs the repairs, and the bond
issue will benefit his own students, who will one day attend Huntington
Beach Union Schools. The statement was approved by a unanimous 5-0 vote
by the board of trustees.
The board also unanimously approved a proposal for intern counselor
services at four middle schools for the 1999-2000 school year.
The district has employed intern counselors in its schools since 1990.
The counselors work directly under the supervision of school
psychologists and provide services with entire classes of students, small
focus groups and individual students and their parents.
The interns are recruited annually from colleges and universities
throughout Southern California. Their work in Ocean View’s schools
provides them with valuable experience while completing field work
requirements for their degrees.
The cost of the counselors Tobacco Use Prevention Education program will
be $45,000.
The district also received an invitation to participate in the Governor’s
Reading Award Program from secretary of Education Gary Hart. The program
is a competition aimed at encouraging students to make independent
reading a regular activity. The information on the program was submitted
to the board for review.
