Five Years Ago
No. 1 Newport Harbor High’s girls volleyball team swept two-time
defending national champions and Back Bay rival Corona del Mar, 15-4,
16-14, 15-8. Misty May had 19 kills and Melissa Schutz added 13. Kelly
Campbell led CdM with eight kills, two assists and one block.
Estancia’s girls volleyball team opened it’s Pacific Coast League season
with a 15-11, 4-15, 15-9, 10-15, 15-13, victory over University. Cyndi
Richards led the team with 15 kills.
Newport Harbor’s football team upset the CIF Southern Section’s No.
1-ranked team, Savanna, 22-15. Brian Johnson returned the opening kickoff
94 yards for a touchdown. Tom Eaton led a ferocious defense with two
sacks.
Costa Mesa’s football team blew out Santa Ana, 63-20, behind Dewayne
Crenshaw’s 252 rushing yards.
Orange Coast College’s football team lost to No. 1 Mt. San Antonio
College, 46-24. OCC’s Chris Jackson had two touchdown receptions in a
losing effort.
Former Orange Coast College basketball coach Alan Sawyer was inducted
into the San Pedro Sportswalk. Sawyer played for John Wooden’s UCLA team
starting in 1945.
To avenge its girls volleyball team, CdM’s girls tennis team upset No. 2
Newport Harbor, 11-7. Sarah Hawkins won all three singles points. Jenny
Glasgow, Christie O’Meara, Alissa Scott and Marisol Perea won all their
doubles matches for the Sea Kings.
CdM’s boys water polo team beat El Toro, 13-4, in it’s Sea View League
opener. Doug Jetton had eight saves and Adam McFarland scored three
goals.
Ten years ago
CdM’s football team took a 33-0 halftime lead and won, 33-13, against
Costa Mesa. Weston Johnson had two touchdown receptions and Brian Lucas
added two touchdown runs.
Estancia’s No. 7-ranked football team rolled to a 17-7 win over Orange.
Josh Wojtkiewicz rushed for 133 yards and Gary Burrows contributed with a
29-yard touchdown run.
Newport Harbor’s football team defeated Long Beach Wilson, 17-7.
Quarterback Steve Scheck was 16 for 29 with 174 yards and ran for a
touchdown.
Dina Birch of Estancia’s girls tennis team took her 29-1 singles record against University’s Jennifer Fylpaa, also 29-1, and won. But the Eagles
lost by the narrowest of margins in a tiebreaker, 9-9 (76-75).
Costa Mesa’s boys water polo team racked up 28 goals as it pounded
Trabuco Hills, 28-13. Corey Delahunt led the Mustangs with eight goals.
CdM’s boys water polo team beat Estancia, 14-3, behind Gunnar Gustafson’s
six goals.
OCC’s women’s soccer team scored five goals in the second half to top
Golden West College 7-2. Michelle Forgette scored twice, including the
tying goal.
CdM’s boys cross country team won the Stanford Invitational. Chris Cannon
won the boys race.
Costa Mesa’s girls cross country team finished fourth at it’s
invitational. Denise Bendz won the girls’ race.
