Girls volleyball: Sailors take second in Chicago
CHICAGO, Illinois - Newport Harbor girls volleyball team suffered
its first loss of the season in the championships of the Nike Challenge
Saturday.
The Sailors (13-1), ranked No. 1 by the Orange County Sportswriters
Poll, fell to Kentucky’s Assumption High, 5-15, 15-4, 15-10.
April Ross and Heather Cullen each had 11 kills, while Krista Dill
added seven kills for Newport. Katie King had 12 digs.
In the semifinals, Newport Harbor defeated West Bend East High from
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 15-5, 17-19, 15-10.
Ross had 20 kills and eight digs, Dill added five blocks, eight digs
and 10 kills and Brenda Waterman had 11 digs and six kills.
The Sailors also took on Chicago’s Downers Grove South in the
quarterfinals, with Newport winning, 15-6, 15-3.
Ross had 13 kills, Dill had nine kills and seven digs and Cullen added
seven kills for the Sailors.
