Tennis: Davenport falters at Grand Slam Cup
MUNICH, Germany - Lindsay Davenport of Newport Beach had a shot at
redemption at U.S. Open champion Serena Williams Friday at the Grand Slam
Cup, but could not make the most of it.
After losing to Williams in the semis at Flushing Meadows, Davenport fell
again to the youngest of the Williams’ sisters, 6-3, 6-4, in the
semifinals.
With elder sister Venus Williams’ 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 9-7, win over Martina
Hingis, that means that Serena and Venus will meet in the finals,
assuring the family bank account a $1.3 millionincrease, with $800,000
going to the winner.
The last time the Williams sisters met in the finals of a WTA Tour final
was in March of this year when Venus defeated Serena, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
