NEWPORT BEACH CITY COUNCIL WRAP-UP
ISSUE: Cost-sharing agreement with Newport Center property owners.
ACTION: Approved 5 to 0
SUMMARY: The agreement would allow the sharing of planning and
Environmental Impact Report costs among four of the center’s property
owners, the Irvine Co., Pacific Life, California State Teachers
Retirement System and the Newport Beach Country Club.
Payments of the consulting costs for general plan amendments will be
made in three installments, beginning Friday, when half the estimated
$500,000 cost is to be paid. The second payment is due Dec. 15 and the
final one April 1 of next year.
A notice of the environmental report already was publicized, and a
public meeting was held earlier this month.
Also, the city will contribute staff time on the project without
charging the typical application fees.
ISSUE: Multiyear memorandum of understanding with police employee
association
ACTION: Approved 5 to 0
SUMMARY: The police are working under an agreement that is a
continuation of a contract that expired Dec. 31, 1998. Both sides agreed
to keep the old contract while a new one was worked out. The new contract
will run through Dec. 31, 2000.
Terms of the new contract include:
* An increase in base salary of 2.5% retroactive to January 1999;
* A second increase in base salary of 2.5% in January 2000
ISSUE: 1999 Balboa Pier repairs award of contract
ACTION: Approved 5 to 0
SUMMARY: The contract providing for repairs to Balboa Pier was awarded
to John S. Meek Company, Inc. for $268,630. Repairs include removing and
installing timber piles, pile caps, corbels and bracing.
Repairs to the portion of the pier under Ruby’s restaurant will
require the removal of the roofing and decking of the restaurant.
Funds for that work will amount to $26,000.
A budget amendment appropriating $106,130 from the General Fund to the
Balboa Repairs Program was also authorized.
