MILLENNIUM MOMENT
O.W. ‘Dick’ Richard was the man behind Richard’s Lido Market, once
a major Newport Beach landmark.
Richard opened the market on Lido Isle in 1948. The store included a
coffee shop and other small businesses, and was the meeting place of The
Goofoffer’s Club, a group of local residents, business leaders and the
occasional celebrity -- including, rumor has it, John Wayne -- who met
regularly for coffee.
Richard was also the president of the Newport Harbor Area Chamber of
Commerce and the Newport Beach United Fund. He died in 1979.
* MILLENNIUM MOMENT celebrates the people who have made a major
contribution to the Newport-Mesa community during this century.
