In the first two games of the 1999 high school football season, the

Edison High football team can be referred to as both globetrotters and

record-setters.

What’s in store next? Maybe, trendsetters?

That’s what the Chargers hope to become late Friday night after

they take on host Capistrano Valley in key nonleague clash in Mission

Viejo. In 12 previous meetings with the Cougars, Edison has never taken

won consecutive games in one of the counties most colorful rivalries. In

fact, the Chargers have never won in their previous trips to Cougar

Country, although they did come close two years ago, when they settled

for a 30-30 tie...

The Chargers have been impressive in their first two outings this

season and in the process, ended a seven-game winless streak dating to

the final seven games of last season. They went to Hawaii and beat

Punahou, 32-6, on Sept. 2, then just last Friday, belted Cypress, 62-14

in a record-breaking performance. Edison raced to an improbable 62-0

halftime lead...

Edison’s junior varsity team played the entire second half against

Cypress...

It was the most points ever scored by a Charger team in a single

game, and they posted the 62 in the opening 24 minutes of play. The old

record was 55 points, set in a 55-0 victory over Redlands in the 1979 CIF

Big Five Conference title game...

Edison junior running back Darryl Poston has rushed for 230 yards

and seven touchdowns in two games (he played just 1 1/2 quarters in the

Cypress win)...

Sophomore Marcus McCutcheon, the only player in Edison history to

start as a freshman, scored three TDs against Cypress, one via the

ground, one through the air, and another on a 30-yard interception

return...

Cypress, which wanted out of the series after suffering a 54-23

loss to the Chargers last year, won’t be playing Edison anytime in the

near future...

Eric Abbascia, the lone returnee along Edison’s offensive line,

will make his ’99 debut at Capistrano Valley. Abbascia missed the first

two games of the season due to an ankle injury he sustained during

August’s two-a-days...

It wasn’t the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, but the Huntington

Beach High football team. Just prior to the Oilers taking the field in

their season opener with Downey, Coach Tony Ciarelli issued all-orange

uniforms to his team. The tactic worked, as a fired up Huntington squad

raced to an early 18-0 lead on the Vikings, then rallied back to score a

25-21 victory...

Oiler junior cornerbackreceiver Brian Miekosz had a memorable

first varsity game with a pair of interceptions...

Pressed into service: Sophomore James Tomasick also had an opening

night he soon won’t forget. The quarterback on the Oiler junior varsity

team, Tomasick was pressed into action when Huntington’s top two punters,

senior Carlos Adame (shoulder) and senior Shaun Donahoe (ankle) left the

Downey game due to injuries. Tomasick assumed the position, and got off

two key punts late in the game. ‘James did a real nice job, and his punts

helped us gain the field position we needed,’ Ciarelli said....

The Ocean View pair of Patrick Campbell and Luka Levu also had

memorable games in their first varsity starts. Campbell, who

quarterbacked the Seahawk freshman team a year ago, caught TD passes

covering 20 and 45 yards, and Levu had TD receptions cover 47 and 28

yards...

Fountain Valley Coach Eric Johnson nabbed his first career head

coaching victory, although he had to sweat out a 7-6 win over Dana Hills.

‘I’m just glad to get this one out of the way,’ he said as a small smile

broke out on his face at midfield following last Friday’s exciting

contest...

The 48 points scored in Friday’s 48-22 win over Twentynine Palms

was the highest output in an opening game posted by an Ocean View team.
