TONIGHT’S GAMES

Newport Harbor vs. Marina...NH by 6

(at Westminster High, 7:30 p.m.)

FRIDAY’S GAMES

Huntington Beach vs. Torrance...HB by 7

(at Torrance High, 7 p.m.)

Edison vs. Capistrano Valley...Edison by 6

(at Capistrano Valley High, 7:30 p.m.)

Fountain Valley vs. Corona/Centennial...FV by 4

(at Centennial High, 7:30 p.m.)

Garden Grove vs. Ocean View...OV by 8

(at Huntington Beach High, 7 p.m.)

And here’s why...

It will be the power run vs. the power run when Marina High hosts

Newport Harbor in a game that could be a turning point for the Viking

program. Marina ran wild over Newport Harbor rival Corona del Mar in last

week’s season opener, and they’ll need to produce another productive

ground game in order to upend the Sailors. Newport Harbor’s balance - and

depth, could prove to be the difference here...Last year: Newport Harbor,

38-13.

Like it city rival Marina, if Huntington Beach High can get its

running game in gear against Torrance, then the Oilers should emerge

victorious. A year ago, the Oilers combined a strong rushing attack with

a stingy defense to record a shutout in the second week of the season. A

similar combo will net a similar result...Last year, Huntington Beach,

24-0.

It’s hard to go against high-flying Edison High, even if the

opponent this week is longtime nonleague nemesis Capistrano Valley. The

Chargers have used a high-scoring offense and a much-improved defense to

steamroll its first two opponents. Capo Valley, meanwhile, blew a big

halftime lead and dropped its opener to Aliso Niguel last week. Edison

won’t roll past the Cougars in this one, but they should emerge with

their first victory in the south end of the county...Last year, Edison,

42-27.

Fountain Valley High will need to put more points on the

scoreboard if the Barons hope to get past Corona/Centennial. The Barons

ran up and down the field last week against Dana Hills, but penalties and

turnovers made them sweat out a 7-6 victory. Take care of those three

facets of the game, and Fountain Valley should survive what should be

tough ballgame...Last year, Fountain Valley, 13-7.

It could very well be a night of fireworks when Ocean View High

hosts Garden Grove. Both programs, who have struggled in recent years,

began their ’99 campaigns with impressive victories. The Seahawks used

the big play to post a 48-22 win over Twentynine Palms, while the

Argonauts did the same in a 33-14 romp past El Modena. It will be Ocean

View’s passing attack that will get the best of the Garden Grove rushing

game, although the Seahawk defense will need to be at its best to detain

the Argonauts’ running tandem of Lee Tousignant and Bryan Loken...Last

year, Ocean View, 8-2.
