Fountain Valley Advisory Committee
ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR THE DISABLED
Joan Siegmann met with Mayor John Collins on Aug. 19 to discuss the
committee’s goals. This included advising city officials on how to make
sidewalks on Warner Avenue wheelchair-accessible by adding ramps in
select locations.
On Sept. 2, Siegmann met with Coastline Community College officials to
discuss online counseling and job retraining services for people with
disabilities, who want to live as independently as possible. She hopes to
develop a referral program with the college for Fountain Valley
residents.
COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION
The commission’s big project is advising city officials about the
development of sports fields at Mile Square Park, said member John
Wordes.
Once Orange County officials donate the 23-acre parcel of land to the
city, the commission hopes to increase the number of softball fields for
youth and adults, because the public demand exceeds the availability of
fields, Wordes said.
The commission also is looking at the possibility of accommodating
increased traffic flow by adding more parking spaces and creating another
exit onto Brookhurst Street from the parking lot at the Recreation
Center.
Next month, the commission will plan this year’s Ghoulish Gala, a free
Halloween event for kids and their families that will be held Oct. 30 at
the Recreation Center from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
TRAFFIC ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Member Steven Cox said the committee is reviewing street extensions for
Euclid Street and Talbert Avenue.
City Engineer Jeff Sinn said the group also is informed about the design
process for the Newhope Street extension, which will curve through a
commercial zone and end at the San Diego Freeway to relieve traffic on
Talbert Avenue.
