JAPANESE VISITORS: Members of the Rotary Club of Newport Balboa will
host members of their Sister City Rotary Club -- Okazaki (Japan) South as
they begin their visit Monday. With the leadership of International
Services Director Frank Anderson and past president Andy Campbell, a busy
four-day visitation schedule has been planned. Included are a welcome by
Mayor Dennis O’Neil and the City Council, dinner at Rotarian Wendell
Fish’s home, golfing at Pelican Hills, a visit to Rogers Gardens, a
progressive dinner with hosts Be LaForce, Scott Paulson and Flossie
Dunning, a visit to the Environmental Nature Center, a harbor cruise on
Rick and Elaine Williams’ yacht, shopping at Fashion Island and of
course, attending the Wednesday evening meeting of the Newport Balboa
Rotary Club.
TOWN & GOWN: Town and Gown, a support group of the University of
California, Irvine, will hold its annual Membership Coffee from 9:30 to
11:30 a.m. Monday at Sherman Library and Gardens, 2647 E. Coast Highway
in Corona del Mar. There will be a brief business meeting followed by a
presentation by Associate Dean Alan Terricciano from the School of the
Arts, who will introduce the 1999-2000 coming attractions in music,
drama, dance and art.
Twenty-five interest groups will be introduced to the membership.
Reservations are not required and new members and guests are welcome,
according to Wanda Cullers, public relations chair for the group.
SUNSHINE SPECIAL: Exchange Club of Newport Harbor member Norm Von Herzen
has arranged for 40 children from the Orange Wood Home for Children to
tour Newport Harbor on one of Seymour Beek’s Balboa Island Ferries on
Sept. 25. There will be 40 children with smiles on their faces as they
tour the Harbor and enjoy some snacks. Good job Norm and Seymour!
LAST DANCE: The Cannery Restaurant closes its doors Sunday night. The
response to the Tuesday night receptions to honor has been amazing. Mayor
Dennis O’Neil proclaimed Cannery owner Bill Hamilton “Mr. Newport Beach”
in a fitting tribute to one who has done so much for our community.
On Tuesday night guests lined up by the dozen to get Hamilton’s autograph
on a beautiful Cannery sketch. One night, French’s Cupcake Bakery
provided a sheet cake with a beautiful Cannery artwork on top -- so
beautiful that folks didn’t want to cut into the cake. Hamilton notes he
hopes to sell all the Cannery artifacts to one person, but he does have
an auctioneer standing by. The Cannery collection of photos is being
given to the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum where they will be displayed.
Some of the cooking equipment will be given to the Soup Kitchen.
The Cannery Cruises moves over to the Riverboat Restaurant and Capt. Mike
Whitehead will still be at the helm, this time working with Clayton
Shurley. The memories of the Cannery and good deeds the Hamiltons and
Cannery staff have done in Newport Beach over the past 26 years have not
gone unnoticed and are greatly appreciated. The Cannery’s last dance is
Sunday. Be there!
