HUNTINGTON BEACH -- Huntington Beach Union High School District’s

Scholastic Aptitude Test scores increased slightly in 1999, but still

remain above the state and national average.

Of the Huntington Beach district students who graduated in 1999, 51%

completed the SAT and scored a total of 1,071 in the verbal and math

sections, out of a possible score of 1,600.

Compared to the class of 1998, the district-wide scores increased by 4

points.

Students graduating in 1999 averaged a score of 1,011 statewide and 1,016

nationally.

“Our kids are doing just super,” said Dorothy Crutcher, director of pupil

personnel. “It’s very typical for scores to bounce around.”

She said the best preparation for taking the SAT is to take many academic

courses related to core subjects, including math, English and science.

“Any type of preparation program is short term and may be of value to

someone who doesn’t test well,” Crutcher said. “To do well on the SAT you

must have an education.”
