COSTA MESA -- The City Council will consider whether to allow nighttime

construction on the proposed Bear Street pedestrian bridge at tonight’s

meeting.

Because of unforeseen delays and pending deadlines, the construction

company filed paperwork requesting additional time.

The applicant’s proposal asks for seven nights over the next seven

months to work on the bridge. The work is proposed only when it can’t be

done during the day.

The 600-foot bridge will be over Bear Street and link South Coast

Plaza with Crystal Court. A new garden area will be at the foot of the

bridge on the west side of the plaza, and it will connect with the

court’s third floor.

The applicant, C.J. Segerstrom and Sons, estimates it will need to do

night work Tuesday, which would also mean a street closure, Sept. 15,

Sept. 23 to pour concrete for a deck and Oct. 13 and 14.

The company will also have to comply with the city’s noise ordinance

if the application is approved.

Other items slated for review and/or approval by the council include:

* consider whether to uphold the Planning Commission’s decision for

setback at 3007 Samoa Place

* revisions to the city’s streetscape and median-development standards

* consider business application by the Girl Scouts to go door-to-door

for the annual product and cookie sale

The council will also receive a report on the West Side Plan that will

list two upcoming workshops. The next workshop Sept. 15 will focus on business-related issues. The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. in the council

chambers.
