ANOTHER CANNERY FAREWELL

Since 1972, the Cannery restaurant has been the benchmark of friendly

service to the Newport Beach community. Now the community is saying

goodbye to the Cannery, which will close its historic doors Sept. 12.

But those doors won’t be closed without the proper farewells.

Speak Up Newport will pay its tribute at its monthly meeting today at

5 p.m. at the Cannery, 3010 Lafayette, Newport Beach.

Historian Art Gronsky, who will host the meeting, will run through the

memorable moments of both the restaurant and its owner, Bill Hamilton.

Hamilton has been involved with a number of different community

organizations including the Newport Harbor Area Chamber, The Commodores

Club, the Restaurant Association and the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum.

In addition to his community leadership, Hamilton has been a friend to

countless people throughout Newport Beach and beyond.

On Tuesday, the Daily Pilot will hold its final “Toast to Tuesday”

also commemorating the Cannery’s closing. It begins at 5:30 p.m.

MAYORS COME TOGETHER FOR PANEL SERIES

The Newport Beach Library’s Second Annual Distinguished Panel Discussion

will begin with a tale of three cities.

The library is sponsoring “A Tale of Three Cities: What’s Happening in

Orange County Cities That Will Make An Impact In The New Millennium?” for

its discussion series at 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Central Library at 1000

Avocado Ave.

Sponsored in part by the Newport Beach Public Library Foundation, the

program will be the first of three fall events to feature community

leaders in discussions about critical Orange County issues.

Newport Beach’s Dennis O’Neil, Santa Ana’s Miguel Pulido and Irvine’s

Christina Shea will sit on the panel.

The discussion will primarily focus on growth, traffic and urban

revitalization issues. Other topics may include the anticipated impact of

Newport Coast annexation and the possibility of a commercial airport at

the former El Toro Marine Corps Base.

Law & Crime in Orange County, the second panel discussion, is

scheduled for Oct. 15. Eye on Orange County Education will conclude the

series Nov. 19.

CHEVRON TO OFFER FREE MAMMOGRAMS

As part of its commitment to the Orange County community and Race for

the Cure, Chevron is offering free mammograms on a first-come,

first-served basis from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 16 at 3190 Harbor Blvd.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation encourages women 40 and older

to have a mammogram every one to two years. In an effort to reach these

women, Chevron is working with the Iris Cantor Center for Breast Imaging

at UCLA, the YWCA Encore Plus program and the Orange County Chapter of

the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to provide 40 free mammograms

to qualified women.

People may drop off donations from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer

Foundation on Monday to any local Chevron stations in Orange County.

CONSERVATIVES HOST ONE OF THEIR OWN

Friends of the American Conservative Union are hosting a cocktail

reception with Rep. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), one of the House Committee

impeachment prosecutors, from 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Balboa Bay

Club, 1221 Pacific Coast Highway, Newport Beach.

The association is requesting a $100 contribution per person and $150

per couple. Sponsor contributions of $1,000 will include a private

meeting and a photo opportunity.
