Phyllis Rawlins Drayton<br/>December 5, 1936 - December 12, 2014
Phyllis raced sailboats actively in Newport Harbor for nearly 70 years. To non-sailing friends, she will be remembered as fun loving and feisty. On the race course, she was all business. She was always a top competitor, especially in adult Sabot regattas. Her many sailing accomplishments included winning the Senior Sabot National Championships.
Along with her husband George Drayton, Phyllis was one of the founding members of the Harbor 20 Class. Last year the Harbor 20 Class dedicated the Phyllis Drayton Perpetual Trophy in recognition of her many years of competitive sailing.
A memorial celebration will be hosted at Newport Harbor Yacht Club on Friday, January 9 at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation, or to Explore Ocean.
