Costa Mesa police are investigating an incident in which two pedestrians, one of them in a wheelchair, were injured Wednesday afternoon when they were hit by a dump truck, authorities said.

A 53-year-old Costa Mesa man and his caregiver were crossing Anaheim Avenue at a crosswalk when the collision occurred just before 4 p.m. between 19th and Plumer streets, said Costa Mesa Police Department spokeswoman Roxi Fyad.

The caregiver, a 72-year-old Anaheim woman, was severely injured and remained in critical condition Thursday, police said.
