Costa Mesa firefighters doused small blazes at a Home Depot store and a home on Thanksgiving.

No one was injured in either fire.

The first fire started around 9:30 a.m. when an extension cord malfunctioned at The Home Depot at 2300 Harbor Blvd., according to authorities.

When firefighters arrived, they saw smoke coming from the store’s garden center and forced their way in.

A crew of about 17 quickly extinguished the flames, which had been held in check by a sprinkler system, according to the Fire Department.

The fire caused about $1,000 in damage.

At about 5:30 p.m., another crew of 17 firefighters responded to a blaze at a home at 308 Bowling Green Drive, near the south side of Orange Coast College.

Firefighters forced their way into the locked one-story house, contained the flames to one room and put them out within 15 minutes, authorities said.

Officials said improperly discarded smoking materials caused the fire. No damage estimate was immediately available.
