Pedestrian, 92, struck by driver, 95, on Costa Mesa street
A 95-year-old driver crashed into a 92-year-old man who was crossing a street in Costa Mesa over the weekend, leaving the pedestrian in critical but stable condition with head trauma, according to authorities.
Police said the driver, a man from Tustin, was headed west on Baker Street near Loren Lane around 5:30 p.m. Saturday when the 92-year-old, who is from Costa Mesa, stepped onto the road. He was crossing from the north side of Baker when the driver hit him, police said.
Crews took the pedestrian to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he remained hospitalized Monday, said Costa Mesa police traffic investigator Darren Wood.
Authorities are investigating the crash but said the pedestrian was not in a crosswalk.
Police questioned the driver at the scene and released him. He showed no signs of impairment and cooperated with investigators, police said.
If police believe the license of an elderly driver should be reevaluated, they can trigger a review by the California Department of Motor Vehicles. But Wood said he didn’t believe that was necessary in this case.
Investigators ask that anyone with information about the crash call (714) 754-5264.
