St. Mary Armenian Church in Costa Mesa will have its seventh annual Armenian Festival from 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday.

It includes beer, wine, Armenian food, dancing, shopping, a raffle and children’s games.

Screening of ‘Everest’ to benefit Newport charity

Tyler Armstrong, an 11-year-old Yorba Linda boy who is scheduled to climb Mount Everest next year, will be the host of a screening of the movie “Everest” at 3 p.m. Sunday in Tustin, with proceeds benefiting Newport Beach-based CureDuchenne, a nonprofit that supports efforts to find a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Tyler hopes to scale the world’s highest summits and has already reached the peak of three – Kilimanjaro, Aconcagua and Elbrus – to help raise awareness of Duchenne.

The screening at the AMC 14 at The District at Tustin Legacy will be followed by a reception with appetizers and soft drinks. Tickets are $30 for adults and $20 for children younger than 12. The theater is at 2457 Park Ave.

Concordia to host Fall Festival of Hymns

The music department of Concordia University in Irvine will hold its Fall Festival of Hymns at 3 p.m. Sunday in the school’s Center for Worship and Performing Arts.

The festival, an annual event that has been held at the university for 35 years, will feature performances by the Concordia choir and master chorale, led by Concordia music professor Michael Busch.

Michael Burkhardt, director of worship and the arts at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Livonia, Mich., will serve as a guest organist and a hymn leader at the festival.

Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for senior citizens. Students are admitted free.

Newport family honored by Operation Smile

The Rodosky family of Newport Beach is scheduled to receive Operation Smile’s Founders Circle Award during a gala Friday in Beverly Hills.

The award recognizes Steve and Kim Rodosky and their six children — Charlie, 20, Jack, 18, William, 16, Matthew, 13, Annie, 11, and Emily, 9 — for their efforts in providing free surgical procedures for children and young adults born with cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities, according to a news release.

“Recently, our family had the privilege of joining Operation Smile’s missions to Mexico and China,” Steve Rodosky said in a statement, “and on both trips we were blown away by their incredible impact on countless children’s futures and our global community.”

Operation Smile is based in Virginia.

Cheer team offers big support for Race for the Cure

The OC All-Stars competitive cheer team raised $14,847 during the Race for the Cure breast cancer fundraiser held Sunday in Newport Beach, according to a news release.

The youth team, based in Foothill Ranch, has 105 members from around Orange County, including Costa Mesa, Irvine and Newport Beach.

The fundraising for the event was conducted almost exclusively by the children, the release said.

Costa Mesa Fire Department specialist receives city award

Brenda Emrick, a Costa Mesa Fire Department community education specialist, was recently awarded the CEO Leadership Award by the city of Costa Mesa’s chief executive, Tom Hatch.

Emrick was recognized for her emergency response training and time spent in China training emergency personnel there.

She also was part of a regional team that accepted a Federal Emergency Management Agency award.

Art soiree to benefit at-risk neighborhoods

The annual KidWorks, WINGS Auxiliary Soiree is set for 7 p.m. Oct. 16 at HD Buttercup at South Coast Collection, 3305 Hyland Ave., Costa Mesa.

WINGS (Women Investing In Graduates Success), which was founded in Newport Beach, focuses on promoting education in Santa Ana. It has helped support seven academic scholarships at Mater Dei High School.

KidWorks is a nonprofit that focuses on tutoring, mentoring, exercise, accountability and encouragement to help needy Santa Ana neighborhoods.

The soiree will feature a collection of fine art from 14 Orange County artists, including Anthony Salvo, owner of Anthony Salvo Fine Art in Newport Beach. The art will be for sale, and a portion of the proceeds will go to KidWorks through the WINGS Auxiliary.

An artist reception will begin at 6 p.m. Tickets are $75 and include a light dinner, wine and beer.

YES event will celebrate 45th anniversary

Youth Employment Service, based in Costa Mesa, will present its Evening of Excellence on Nov. 5 to celebrate the organization’s 45th anniversary.

The event will be held from 5:30 to 10 p.m. at the Radisson hotel, 4545 MacArthur Blvd., Newport Beach. It will include dinner, live and silent auctions, live entertainment and an awards ceremony.
