2 injured when power boat, UCI rowing team collide in Newport
A UC Irvine student was taken to a hospital Friday morning after a power boat crashed into her crew team’s row boat in Newport Beach, splitting the vessel in half and tossing several team members into the water, authorities said.
One woman was taken to the hospital with what appeared to be a broken foot. Another woman reported a foot injury but declined to be taken to a hospital, said Orange County sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Marble.
The Sheriff’s Department Harbor Patrol responded to Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort at 7:42 a.m. after the crash was reported during the crew team’s practice, Marble said.
Authorities believe the four men aboard the 22-foot power boat were headed out to fish when the collision occurred.
“As far as we can tell, it was inattention on the part of the men on the power boat,” Marble said.
No arrests were reported.
