Around Town: Luncheon raises $230,000 for Global Center for Women and Justice
Vanguard University’s Global Center for Women and Justice raised $230,000 for its advocacy and education programs at its Priceless Luncheon to End Human Trafficking on Sept. 19 at the Balboa Bay Resort in Newport Beach.
The annual event, chaired by Jasmine Shodja, vice president of Wells Fargo, brought together 350 people to honor victims of human trafficking and other community members.
Newport Beach resident Betsy Tarbell of Tarbell, Realtors received a Lifetime Achievement Award for her work with The Salvation Army, United Way and Women of Vision.

Newport Coast couple host Harvesters party
Newport Coast residents JoAnn and Anthony Fanticola hosted the Harvesters Underwriter Party on Sept. 17 to support the upcoming Harvesters Fashion Show & Luncheon.
The party was held to thank area philanthropists who have helped the Harvesters group raise funds for Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.
More than 200 underwriters and their guests were treated to a presentation of the fall 2016 collection of luxury shoes, handbags and women’s accessories from the Roger Vivier French fashion house, along with live music, French delicacies and more.
The 23rd annual Harvesters Fashion Show & Luncheon will be held Oct. 7 at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa.

UCI medical students to rally for health system reform
The Latino Medical Student Association chapter at the UC Irvine School of Medicine will present a rally and candlelight vigil from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday to promote a nonprofit, publicly financed, single-payer health system.
The event is part of a Medicare-for-All National Student Day of Action that organizers say will involve more than 30 other medical schools nationwide.
The rally will be at the UCI School of Medicine’s Medical Education Building at 836 Health Sciences Road, Irvine.
