Police arrested a man and a woman on suspicion of breaking into a commercial lot in Costa Mesa and trying to drive off with a trailer early Tuesday.

Officers were responding to an alarm in the 3500 block of Cadillac Avenue around 1:30 a.m. when they saw a woman try to hide from them as they drove by, Costa Mesa police Lt. Vic Bakkila said.

Police detained the woman and a man she was with when they couldn’t explain why they were there, Bakkila said.

Police identified the suspects as Edee Philips, 25, of Newport Beach and Jess Walker, 36, of Mission Viejo.

Officers believe that the two had broken into the gated parking lot of a business and disabled the security cameras.

Police allege the pair scraped the business’s name off a trailer in the lot and hooked it to their vehicle, intending to steal it.

They also are suspected of cutting into a locked truck and stealing auto parts and tools, Bakkila said.
