An 11-year-old boy was taken to the hospital Sunday evening after he was chased down and bitten by a pit bull in Costa Mesa, police said.

The boy was walking in the 1000 block of Nancy Lane around 7:30 p.m. when the dog attacked him, Costa Mesa police spokesman Lt. Greg Scott said.

Police said the boy was scared and ran when he saw the dog come out the front door of a house that had been left open.

The dog caught the boy and bit him, leaving 4- to 6-inch cuts on his right leg, Scott said.

He was treated at an Irvine hospital, and authorities impounded the dog, according to police.

Officials have also quarantined the dog while they investigate whether it has a history of attacks and if it has been vaccinated, Scott said.
