A 23-year-old man died Sunday afternoon after the electric bicycle he was riding crashed into a parked car in Newport Beach, police said.

Jonathan Wilson was headed west on Bayside Drive around 1:30 p.m. when his bike hit a Mazda van parked near El Paseo Drive, according to authorities.

Police said Wilson was a Newport Beach resident, but coroner’s officials said he lived in Costa Mesa.

It’s unclear how fast Wilson was riding, but Newport Beach police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said the force of the crash threw Wilson off the bike and into the van’s back window.

Wilson was not wearing a helmet, police said. He suffered several cuts but was conscious and responsive when help arrived, according to Manzella.

Paramedics took Wilson to a trauma center in Santa Ana, where he died from his injuries at about 2:30 p.m., police said.

Police asked that anyone with information about the crash contact Investigator Dave Darling at (949) 644-3746 or [email protected].
