First a parade, then the big contest: Junior Lifeguards take on the Monster Mile

Mermaids, sharks, squid and other sea creatures packed Newport Beach on Thursday morning for the annual Monster Mile competition.
About 1,300 costumed Newport Beach Junior Lifeguards participated in the contest, one of the last events in the seven-week summer Junior Lifeguards program.
After the morning parade, themed “Creatures of the Deep,” the guards and City Manager Dave Kiff competed in a 1-mile beach run and a 1-mile swim near the Balboa Pier.
