Raising Cane’s, a Louisiana-based fast-food chain known for its yellow Labrador mascot, fresh chicken fingers with secret sauce, crinkle-cut fries, coleslaw, Texas toast and sweet tea, has broken ground in Costa Mesa on its first California location.

The restaurant, at 3150 Harbor Blvd., is scheduled to open in October and employ 50 to 60 people. The site, formerly home to a Burger King that has been demolished, is across the street from another chicken chain, Chick-fil-A.

“We have been looking forward to bringing our ‘one love’ to California for years, and it’s almost surreal that we’re just a few short months away,” Cheryl Reed, area director for Raising Cane’s, said in a news release. “I can’t believe how many closet Caniacs I’ve already met here in Costa Mesa who keep telling me how happy they are that we’re on our way.

“And local schools and other organizations around the area are about to learn that when we talk about active community involvement, we’re not joking around.”

Raising Cain’s plans to open two other Orange County locations late this year. The company currently has more than 225 restaurants in 18 states.
