Bob and Barbara White, co-owners of Bob White’s Karate Studio in Costa Mesa, recently received a proclamation from state Sen. John Moorlach (R-Costa Mesa).

The couple were credited for their years of fundraising efforts for Royal Family Kids, a nonprofit that aids abused, neglected and abandoned children. The Whites, who received the proclamation Friday, also organize fundraising karate and golf tournaments.

“We are now working with karate studios all over the world to get them involved,” Bob White said in an email. “Child abuse is everywhere, and the more we can do to spread the good work Royal Family Kids does, we want to do.”

Costa Mesa TV show celebrates 1,000th episode

The city of Costa Mesa’s TV show, “Costa Mesa Minute,” celebrated its 1,000th episode Tuesday.

The milestone episode — which ran about 3 1/2 minutes — took a retrospective turn, showing clips of various moments over the years, like when host Dane Bora dressed up as Snoopy for City Hall’s annual Snoopy House Christmas display.

The weekday show began in September 2011 to publicize city events and other local stories.

“While it’s hard to believe we have made it through 1,000 episodes, I am extremely proud of the milestone and look forward to the next 1,000,” Bora said in a statement. “I am hopeful that more community members will make the ‘Costa Mesa Minute’ a part of their daily routine.”

The show has won several awards, including a Golden Hub of Innovation Award last year from the Assn. of California Cities, Orange County.

“Costa Mesa Minute” is available on the city’s website, Facebook page and YouTube channel and on Costa Mesa TV, which is Channel 3 on Time Warner Cable and Channel 99 on AT&T U-verse.

On Saturday and Sunday, in cooperation with Clothes for the Cause, the venue will present a drive for used clothing and other soft goods to support Patriots and Paws, a nonprofit organization that helps veterans, active military personnel and reservists with housing and home furnishings and matches those in need with animal companions.

Items that will be accepted include clothes, shoes, towels, gloves, hats, sheets, blankets, quilts, bedspreads, decorative pillows, drapes, luggage, area rugs, purses, belts and stuffed animals.

Donations may be dropped off at the admission gates from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Anyone with a bag of donated items will receive free admission to the Market Place.

On July 11, Marine Corps Air Station El Toro Detachment 017 of the Marine Corps League will hold a rummage sale from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Treasure Island, a section of the Market Place for garage sellers, to raise funds for its programs, which provide financial and other support to needy veterans and their families.
