Dave Grohl joins Chevy Metal in Costa Mesa

There is one more night remaining for Costa Mesa’s 60th anniversary celebration.

Organizers will be hard-pressed to top what took place Saturday night at the main stage on the OC Fairgrounds parking lot. Dave Grohl, the lead singer of Foo Fighters, joined Chevy Metal, which features Foo drummer Taylor Hawkins, for a set of cover songs that lasted roughly an hour.

Grohl referred to Hawkins as the mastermind of the event.

Van Halen’s “Panama,” and “Under Pressure,” by Queen and David Bowie, were among the cover songs performed by Chevy Metal (Mick Murphy- guitar; Wiley Hodgden – bass/vocals) and Grohl.

Before one of the cover songs, Hawkins said to Grohl, “You rocked out with these guys once. But this is a little different.”

The band then played, “Miss you,” by the Rolling Stones.

During the set, Grohl requested Crown Royal whiskey and he got it. He acted a bit silly while performing, “Under Pressure.”

Grohl also joked about always wanting to be in Chevy Metal, his “favorite band,” but Hawkins only lets him play when he calls him to join the band for a night.

The band also played “My Sharona,” by The Knack and closed with “I think I’m turning Japanese,” by The Vapors.

Grohl announced last year that Foo Fighters were going on a hiatus, so the Costa Mesa crowd received a rare treat Saturday night.

According to loudwire.com, Hawkins said Foo Fighters are “getting started” on their next album, the follow up to the 2011 groundbreaking album “Wasting Light.” Saturday night was just about fun and cover songs amid fireworks and Costa Mesa’s 60th anniversary celebration.
