2 arrested after high-speed chase

Irvine police arrested two people following a brief high-speed pursuit on Jamboree Road, authorities said Monday.

Police responded to 2300 Dupont Drive about 8:15 a.m. Sunday after reports of a man trying the handles on vehicles in an underground parking garage, according to the Irvine Police Department.

When officers arrived, they saw Jesse Jet Brooks, 29, in the act of burglarizing a vehicle, police said.

Brooks got into a vehicle and drove toward officers, police said. An officer fired at Brooks, but missed. When Brooks drove onto Dupont Drive, other officers chased him. Brooks drove on the wrong side of the street on Jamboree Road, about two blocks from the parking garage.

He drove to an apartment complex on Via Lucca and abandoned his vehicle after crashing it into a wall, police said. Brooks ran into the complex and told a resident he needed help after being in a car crash, police said. The resident let him use the phone, while police set up a perimeter.

Police arrested Brooks as he left the apartment at 8:45 a.m. Sunday. About 9:05 a.m. Annette Soyinthisane, 26, arrived at the complex in a taxi, and police said they believe she was there to help Brooks escape. She was arrested on suspicion of providing false identification to police.

Police said the San Diego area residents were staying at a local hotel, where officers found evidence of fraudulent activity and stolen property from crimes in Orange and San Diego counties, including recent vehicle burglaries in Irvine.

Police arrested Brooks on suspicion of assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, evading officers and vehicle burglaries. Brooks also had a no-bail warrant for assault, issued in San Diego county.

As of Monday afternoon, Brooks remained in Orange County jail. Soyinthisane, who listed herself as “other Asian!” on the Orange County Sheriff’s Department jail website, posted bond and has been released.
