Coroner: No alcohol in system of driver in wreck that killed 5

The driver in a Memorial Day car crash in Newport Beach that claimed the lives of five Irvine teenagers did not have drugs or alcohol in his system, according to the Orange County coroner.

Abdulrahman M. Alyahyan, 17, of Irvine, did not drink or use drugs in the hours before his 2008 Infiniti sedan slammed into a center divider on Jamboree Road, hit a tree and caught fire, according to the coroner’s toxicology report, which the Daily Pilot reviewed Thursday.

Results from the screenings were available for two of the car’s four passengers as well.

Cecilia Zamora and Robin Cabrera, both 17, had cough medicine and antihistamines in their systems, according to the screening, but no alcohol or illegal drugs.

No over-the-counter medication was in Alyahyan’s system, however.

Reports were not yet available for passengers Nozad al Hamawendi, 17, and Aurora Cabrera, Robin Cabrera’s 16-year-old sister. It was unclear when those would become available.

Alyahyan attended University High School. The four passengers went to Irvine High School.

The May 27 crash threw four of the teens from the car, and partially ejected a fifth. Robin Cabrera died at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, and the other four died at the scene.

Police said excessive speed was a factor in the crash.
