Newport Junior Lifeguards open ocean training season

Hundreds of local children hit the sand and surf Tuesday during the opening ceremony for Newport Beach’s 2015 Junior Lifeguard season.

For the next seven weeks, the junior guards, who range in age from 9 to 15, will learn about the ocean, beach safety and physical fitness.

Newport’s program is usually in high demand. This year, more than 1,300 youths signed up.
