Around Town: Ueberroths donate $5 million to Hoag to advance women’s health
The Hoag Hospital Foundation announced a $5 million gift from philanthropists Ginny and Peter Ueberroth to help Dr. Allyson Brooks, executive medical director of the Hoag Women’s Health Institute, advance research, education and program development.
The grant was awarded through the Peter and Virginia Ueberroth Family Foundation.
Brooks said her first objective is opening a women’s health and wellness center at Hoag Health Center Newport Beach in early 2016. It will combine preventive care, wellness resources and health services through a team planned to include acupuncturists, therapists, prenatal and postnatal consultants, psychologists and nutritionists, along with physicians and nurse practitioners dedicated to women’s care.
“I have been so impressed with Dr. Brooks’ work and her lifelong passion for providing innovative and personalized care to women of all ages in Orange County,” Ginny Ueberroth said in a statement. “Peter and I are privileged to support her and excited to play a role in an undertaking that is sure to change the lives of thousands of women in our community who turn to Hoag for high-quality, exceptional care.”
Peter Ueberroth is best known as a former commissioner of Major League Baseball and organizer of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
The grant established an endowed chair in Brooks’ honor, one of the most prestigious honors awarded to a physician.
“I am humbled to receive this remarkable honor from the Ueberroth family and excited about what it will mean for women’s health in Orange County,” Brooks said in a statement. “As endowed chair, I am committed to accepting the great responsibility of delivering on our promise to keep Hoag a leading-edge clinical care provider and a pioneer in this collaborative approach to women’s health.”
