A 22-year-old man accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend in a UC Irvine parking lot was charged Monday with attempted murder and other felonies.

Rosendo Aguilar of Solana Beach was arrested Thursday evening after a female UCI student was attacked near the Vista del Campo Norte student housing facility, according to campus spokeswoman Laura Rico.

The woman was stabbed multiple times before another UCI student intervened and held the assailant at the scene until police arrived, authorities said.

The woman was taken to a trauma center in moderate condition, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.

In addition to attempted murder, Aguilar is scheduled to be arraigned July 10 on felony charges of aggravated assault with a knife and domestic battery. He also is facing misdemeanor counts of vehicle tampering, petty theft and vandalism. The vandalism charge stems from a June 6 incident in which Aguilar is accused of damaging a television belonging to his ex-girlfriend, according to court documents.

A prosecutor on the case was not immediately available to explain the other charges.

Aguilar appeared in court Monday but did not enter a plea, according to court records. He is in county jail with bail set at $2 million.

He does not attend UCI, Rico said.
