High-speed chase ends with arrest of man with woman, kids in van
A man arrested after a high-speed chase that ended in Costa Mesa on Saturday night may have intended to drive off a cliff with a woman and children in the car with him, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP officials did not immediately identify the man, and it was unclear what relationship he had with the woman and three or four children in the minivan.
The pursuit began in Temecula after officers responded to a call about an argument between the man and the woman, CHP Officer Florentino Olivera said.
Officers chased the van at speeds up to 85 mph into Orange County and south on the 55 Freeway until it exited at Victoria Street, Olivera said.
The pursuit ended around 8:30 p.m. on Wilson Street near Pacific Avenue, according to the Costa Mesa Fire Department.
Olivera said the driver jumped out of the van while it was still moving and tried to run. The vehicle rolled to a curb and officers used an electronic stun gun to capture the suspect, Olivera said.
The man was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, driving under the influence and evading officers, Olivera said.
