New educational option opens in Newport Beach

The Halstrom Academy has opened a Newport Beach campus offering its 1:1 educational model in which one student works with one teacher for each class.

The private school had its soft opening in January but held a grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in April.

“The 1:1 model works well with a lot of students who are here because they have busy schedules or learning challenges,” Huntington Beach Campus Director and former Newport Beach interim Director Gina Johnson said. “For instance, we have students who are figure skaters, golfers or tennis players that can’t be in classes five days a week because they have practice or games.”

June Tseng, a former Sylvan Learning Center director, will be appointed as the Newport Beach campus director June 22.

Tseng earned her bachelor’s of arts in liberal studies and teacher education from the Dominican University of California, a private college in San Rafael, in 2004. She also earned a multiple subjects teaching credential from Cal State Los Angeles.

The school is open to sixth- through 12th-grade students and currently has 32 students enrolled. Newport Beach is the academy’s 15th location in California and fourth in Orange County.

A Mission Viejo campus opened in 2004 while Anaheim Hills and Huntington Beach campuses opened in 2012.

Halstrom offers more than 140 courses in English, fine arts, foreign language, math, physical education, practical arts, science and social sciences. These courses include 12 Advanced Placement courses for high school students.
